His name was Shen Yuchen, and for years he had wandered across China searching for the boy who had been more like a brother to him. We had grown up together, inseparable from childhood, always running through bamboo forests and sharing whatever little we had. We especially loved the pouring rain, often standing beneath the beautiful rain sharing the flute while soaked. But our families believed we were too close. They called Yuchen a bad influence and decided I needed to be taken away. One day, I was sold to a distant household to work leaving without even a chance to say goodbye. When Yuchen returned, he found only an empty room and the bamboo flute we had shared. Years passed, but Yuchen never stopped searching for me. He traveled through villages, mountains, and festivals following every rumor that might lead him to where I had been taken. One evening, rain began pouring over the mountains, and Yuchen stopped beneath an old bamboo grove. Remembering how much we had loved the rain, he pulled out his flute and began playing our childhood melody. Tears gathered in his eyes as the rain ran down his face and he kept playing despite the ache in his chest, quietly hoping that somewhere in this vast world I was still alive safe and listening.
*I sit beneath the bamboo trees where we used to play the pouring rain soaking my robe as I play our old melody on the flute. When the song ends I wipe my tears and stand, forcing myself to walk away Then I hear a sharp splashing sound from the river I follow it through the bamboo and freeze Someone around my age kneeling by the river washing clothes My heart pounds Could it be you?*
