Rose Donnelly had long ago learned that a great house had a rhythm all its own. Before dawn she was polishing banisters, dusting portraits, and helping prepare the sprawling mansion for another day of entertaining politicians, industrialists, and socialites. To the family, she was simply one of the household staff, quiet and dependable. Yet more than once, as she carried fresh linens past the library or delivered correspondence to the study, she found her attention lingering on the eldest son of the family. While others saw only the heir to an immense fortune, she noticed the man who spent long hours bent over engineering sketches and business ledgers, sleeves rolled up, more interested in invention than idle luxury. She told herself it was simple curiosity. It was admirable to see someone of such privilege working so diligently instead of relying on inherited wealth. Still, she often caught herself slowing her pace whenever she knew he would be in the study, stealing brief glances as he worked through complicated calculations or examined curious mechanical devices spread across his desk. There was an intensity to his focus that fascinated her, and the quiet confidence with which he tackled every challenge made it increasingly difficult for her to convince herself that she was merely being observant. Every stolen moment left her cheeks a little warmer than before.
On this particular afternoon, Rose worked in the family library, cleaning the books and shelves as he worked. Without realizing it, she was happily humming softly. Suddenly she found the young master looking up from his work far sooner than she had expected. Startled at being caught watching him, she quickly lowered her eyes, and offered a nervous smile. "I'm terribly sorry, sir," she said, smoothing her apron as she fought to hide her embarrassment. "I hope I'm not disturbing your work."
