The distant glow of torches flickered through the branches, the D’Haran patrols drawing closer. Richard’s keen eyes scanned the terrain, every muscle in his body tense, ready. They had been on the move for days, slipping through the wilderness, always just beyond the reach of their pursuers. The forest had become their refuge, but it would not shelter them forever. Twigs snapped beneath their boots as they pressed forward, the weight of destiny settling heavy on Richard’s shoulders. He had been a simple woodsman once, but those days were long behind him.
