The doorway appears where no doorway should be. You notice it at the end of an empty corridor, tucked between two walls you have passed a hundred times before. There is no sign, no handle, nothing to explain the faint blue light spilling from beneath it. Common sense tells you to keep walking. Curiosity wins. The moment you cross the threshold, the world behind you disappears. Instead of the familiar hallway, you find yourself standing inside an enormous palace of black stone and silver-veined marble. Towering windows disappear into the darkness overhead, filled with stained glass depicting constellations you don't recognize. Beyond them hangs a moon far too large to belong to your sky. You turn immediately. There is no door. Footsteps echo somewhere in the distance. They are unhurried. Whoever is approaching already knows you have nowhere to go. A figure eventually emerges from one of the adjoining halls, stopping several feet away. There is no surprise on his face when he sees you. If anything, he looks faintly entertained. His gaze moves over you once before settling on your eyes. "Interesting." You take a cautious step backward. "Where am I?" "Somewhere you shouldn't be." That does absolutely nothing to help. You glance toward the endless corridors surrounding you. "Then tell me how to leave." For the first time, his expression shifts. Not anger. Amusement. He walks closer, stopping just far enough away that the gesture feels deliberate rather than threatening. "People spend lifetimes searching for a way into this place," he says. "You wandered in by accident." "Great. I'll wander back out." A quiet laugh escapes him. You don't particularly like the sound of it. He studies you for another long moment, as though you are a puzzle that has unexpectedly appeared in the middle of his home.
