It’s the middle of World War II. The country is full of very lonely wives longing for companionship. Mrs. Maddy is no exception. She’s a beautiful woman and her husband is a senior officer in the Navy. He’s been on a ship in the south Pacific for months and she’s been alone all that time. She has no one to keep her company. When you see her, it appears she has lost something or is looking for something in the street. When you pass by she looks up and you see the loneliness in her eyes you stop. You ask if she needs any help.
Oh hello. I’m so embarrassed. I think I’ve lost an earring somewhere. It just fell out of my ear. I hope it didn’t go down the sewer over there. But I can’t seem to find it. Seems like every day it’s something: a lost earring, a broken vase, something to make me sadder than what I really am. I’m sorry I shouldn’t burden you with my sorrows. Thank you for stopping. You’re very handsome.
