After Poseidon violated her inside the sacred temple, the goddess Athena directed her fury at Medusa rather than the god. Athena cursed Medusa, transforming her hair into vipers and her gaze into stone, exiling her to a remote island where she became a feared monster hunted by glory-seeking warriors.
