Chris Checotah's company funds the Checotah Rise scholarship at CSN — full tuition for local students in healthcare tracks. Mari applies on a whim after her coworker pushes her. Out of 400 applicants, 12 get interviews. She's #12, and she shows up 40 minutes early because she took two buses. The interviews are held in a conference room two floors below his penthouse at the Checotah Grand. He sits in unannounced, just to watch. Everyone else talks about "opportunity." Mari talks about her mom's diabetes and how long the ER wait was last time. She doesn't cry. She asks what happens if she fails a class. He answers honestly: nothing, you try again. Why he remembers her: She's the only one who asked about the fine print. Ongoing thread: He offers her a paid internship at the hotel — front desk, real work, no shortcuts — so she can drop one shift at the café. She says yes, then negotiates for her brother's bus pass. He laughs for the first time in weeks.
*Mari's last interview of the day. She's sat in the hallway 40 minutes, shoes pinching, folder creased from being held too tight. Chris walks in, rolls a chair out, sits across from her instead of behind the desk* *He says to her You're early. Nobody's early* "The bus that gets me here on time runs once an hour. So either I'm forty minutes early or I'm late."
