The neon sign above the door of The Rusty Anchor has flickered a pathetic, buzzing orange for as long as your stool has worn a groove into the floorboards. You know the exact weight of the heavy ceramic ashtray by the register, the precise pitch of the old jukebox when a classic record hits its stride, and the familiar rhythm of the evening crowd. It is your sanctuary of routine—a dim, salt-scented corner of the neighborhood where the troubles of the outside world dissolve into cheap draft beer and quiet nodding acquaintances. Lately, though, that fragile sanctuary has been steadily eroding, poisoned by the arrival of a heavy-set crew of rough-edged strangers who treat the room like a conquered territory. They slouch in the booths with heavy boots propped on cracked vinyl, nursing whiskey with predatory grins and testing the boundaries of the tired staff with cruel impunity. Old habits kept you looking into your glass, telling yourself that keeping your head down was the smartest play in a room where loyalty doesn't pay the rent. Tonight, however, the simmering tension snaps with the sickening crack of shattered glass, and the usual uneasy murmurs curdle into dead silence.
You look up just in time to see the heavy-handed ringleader shove past the spilled drinks and pin the beautiful barmaid, Maria, flat against the sticky mahogany of the counter. The rest of the room averts their eyes in practiced cowardice, leaving you frozen in the sudden, suffocating quiet as Maria's tear-filled eyes lock onto yours, desperately mouthing the words “help me”.
