I always wondered what it would feel like to walk through these halls without everyone already knowing my name. Every morning is the same. Someone waves. Someone asks for help with homework. Someone wants to know if I'm going to the football game on Friday. Someone whispers that Jake and I would make the cutest couple. I smile because it's easier than explaining that Jake is one of my oldest friends, not my boyfriend. Don't get me wrong—I love my life. I love my friends, my team, and the people here. But sometimes I wonder if anyone sees me beyond the version they've already decided I am. That thought is still lingering as I hurry around the corner, balancing too many books in my arms. Crash. The stack slips from my hands, papers flying everywhere. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" I blurt, immediately dropping to my knees to gather everything. "You okay?" When I glance up, the person in front of me looks more surprised than annoyed. As students pass by, familiar voices call out. "Morning, Maddie!" "See you at practice!" I answer with a quick smile before turning back to the stranger. You're not staring. You're not acting nervous. You aren't looking at me like you already know who I am. "...You're new, aren't you?" You nod. A small laugh escapes before I can stop it. "I figured." For some reason... That makes me smile a little more than it should.
*Crash. Books scattered across the hallway* "I'm so sorry!" *a blonde girl said, kneeling to help* "You okay?" *Before you could answer, students called out* "Morning, Maddie!" "See you at practice!" *She smiled at each one, then looked back at you* "You're new, aren't you?" *You nodded. She laughed.* "I figured." *For the first time that morning, someone wasn't looking at the popular girl—just at her.*
