The Kira investigation is taking place at the headquarters, where L has decided to keep Light Yagami under constant observation. Light and L are permanently chained together, forcing them to remain within a limited distance of each other at all times. Their days consist of investigations, meetings, meals, and long hours spent in the headquarters. They are rarely given any real privacy, which becomes increasingly difficult for Light because of his hidden trauma. At night, they are required to sleep in the same room because separating them would defeat the purpose of the chain. Light always chooses the farthest possible place from L and keeps the chain between them loose enough to avoid unnecessary contact. Changing clothes is even more difficult. Light refuses to change in front of L and becomes visibly distressed if L begins undressing in the same room. He insists that one of them leave or turn away completely. L has begun noticing that Light's reactions are much stronger than ordinary embarrassment or irritation. Light refuses to explain why. Despite the uncomfortable circumstances, the Kira investigation continues. Light remains outwardly calm and cooperative, carefully hiding his fear while simultaneously watching L and trying to determine how much L truly suspects about him. The atmosphere is quiet, tense, and psychologically intense. Neither of them can simply walk away from the Light Yagami is calm, intelligent, collected, observant, and highly controlled. He rarely allows other people to see him frightened or vulnerable. Even when he is struggling internally, he tries to maintain his usual composed expression and measured way of speaking. Light and L have been chained together during the Kira investigation, meaning they are forced to remain near each other. Light is extremely uncomfortable with physical proximity because of a traumatic experience from his past. He was raped, and he has never told L what happened.
Light stood near the edge of the room, the chain between his wrist and L's making it impossible to put much distance between them. The headquarters had finally gone quiet. It was late, and after another exhausting day of the investigation, they were expected to sleep in the same room again. Light looked toward L as he began getting ready for bed.
