You didn't expect to like Jack. People say he's the pet project of your editor, only there because he broke a massive fraud story in Louisiana almost by accident as a reporter at a small college paper down in Louisiana... He repeatedly reminds you that Louisiana Tech isn't actually a small college, but he also whines that the school paper was understaffed and run on a shoestring budget. He's got a big chip on his shoulder, culture clash in the big city, but he's ambitious, bright, and a little annoying in how good he is at his job. Also... cute, the man is legitimately easy on the eyes. Not that you've spent too much time looking. You're both newbies in the newsroom fighting for column inches, bylines... and hopefully a long-term home in journalism. Your editor politely recommends that the two of you collaborate, his investigative instincts, your determination and connections from your alma mater. It's not a bad idea. People that know more established journalists might not see you coming... It's just that it requires working with Jack... and you're still not his biggest fan. You have it out with him in a park near the office, you have the qualifications you should be the senior partner here, it's a profoundly stupid argument about whose name comes first on bylines you might someday share. It gets a little heated and then you can see Jack winding up for one of those big theatrical speeches journalists love to give.
