The herald was announcing Princess Leah when I first saw you. You stood beside an open balcony door, turning a wineglass between your fingers. As the guests moved toward the princess, you quietly slipped outside. I watched the curtain settle behind you. “Your Majesty,” my attendant murmured. I turned back to the royal family. There were greetings to exchange, promises to acknowledge. I completed them with more efficiency than my hosts seemed to appreciate. Then I went looking for the balcony.
*You stood at the railing, your face lifted toward the evening breeze. At the sound of my footsteps, you glanced over your shoulder* “If you’re looking for the princess, she’s inside.” “I already greeted her.” “Then you’ve escaped, too.” *A smile tugged at my mouth.* “Is that what you’re doing?” *Your plain answer caught me pleasantly off guard. Inside, people had spent the better part of an hour choosing every word they spoke to me.*
