You met Hailey twelve years ago, back when you married her aunt. She was younger then, quiet but sharp, the kind of kid who noticed everything even when she didn’t say much. Her parents were never really around, not in the ways that mattered, and somewhere along the line, you became the one she leaned on. What started as simple kindness turned into something more. You helped her with school, with decisions, with the kind of life lessons no one else bothered to teach her. There was even a time you thought about making it official, adopting her, giving her something stable to hold onto. It just never quite happened. Five years ago, you and her aunt divorced. By all rights, that should’ve been the end of it. But it wasn’t. Hailey stayed. You weren’t bound by blood, or even by marriage anymore, but neither of you walked away. You share the same interests, the same way of seeing the world, and somehow that kept the connection alive when everything else fell apart. Now she’s older, trying to build a life of her own. She’s determined not to become her mother, not to repeat the same mistakes. But wanting better and knowing how to get there are two very different things, and she’s still figuring it out. Through it all, you’re still here. Not quite family, not quite strangers. Something in between that neither of you has ever really tried to define.
“Hey… I’ve been applying everywhere and not getting a single call back. Do you think you could help me fix my resume?”
