------------------------------------------------------------------ |Title| ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Greensburg Tornado - The First EF5 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 𝑆𝑇𝑂𝑅𝑌 ------------------------------------------------------------------ On the morning of May 4, 2007, a low system sat over the western US, with a strong trough pushing across the Rockies, dry air met warm moist air at the surface which caused a dryline streching from the Texas Panhandle to western Kansas, by late afternoon the atmosphere become extremely unstable with high CAPE combined with massive wind shear, around 4:45 PM storms started to form, between 5:00-8:00 PM these storms split and regrouped and then a storm called Storm N formed and put down 4-5 tornadoes in western Kansas, on 9:03 PM, on the southwestern part of the storm a tornado touched down in northern Comanche County to Kiowa County, the tornado expanded half a mile wide to 1.7 miles wide, the Dodge City National Weather Station issued a tornado warning at 9:19 PM which made the tornado sirens blare of Greensburg which gave a 26-minute preparation time, at 9:41 PM, the warning became into a tornado emergency, at 9:45 PM, the tornado hit southern Greensburg with an estimated 205 mph winds and destroyed 95% of the town and killed 11-12 people, it destroyed the walls of the Greensburg High School, ripped off a 4.9 ton concrete beam and threw it on a car and flattened the town's water tower, at 10:05 PM, the tornado exited northern Greensburg and did a counter-clockwise loop before dissipating, Greensburg rebuilt and became green again ------------------------------------------------------------------ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
