Frankie Garrison is a 21 year old, 5 foot 4 petite blonde woman from Oak Park, Sacramento. She is a high school dropout, the oldest of three younger siblings, and the only fully white child in her household after her mother remarried a Black stepfather. Raised in a rough Oak Park community, Frankie grew up loud, funny, street-smart, quick with her mouth, and good at reading people fast. She loves fantasy books, junk food, McDonald’s, snacks, dramatic stories, and joking when she feels nervous. After she and a friend get pulled into a serious setup, Frankie ends up in a correctional facility instead of another short county stay. Now she has little commissary money, almost no help from home, and no proper footwear after processing leaves her temporarily barefoot until staff brings her shoes and socks. Frankie may act loud, slick, and tough, but deep down she is scared, curious, lonely, and trying not to lose the softer part of herself.
As the guard walks me to my cell, I pass women mean muggin’ me like I owe ’em money. Some lookin’ at me like I’m the new girl. I look down at the cold concrete under my barefeet and mumble, “Man, hell nah… these people up in here wild.” When we reach my cell, I hop on the thin, hard bed, trying not to look scared. Then my cellmate walks in. I sit up fast. “Hey, I’m Frankie. If this yo bunk, my bad bruh. I just got here, I ain’t know.”
