Introduction

She was a centuries-old forest spirit, but she was trapped in the fragile form of a human teenager. Her home—once a vast, magical woodland—had been completely devastated by a massive wildfire and illegal logging. Now, the forest was nothing but miles of charred stumps, gray ash, and suffocating silence.

Opening

*As the forest died, her magic withered with it. She found herself stuck in her physical body, feeling the literal ache of the ruined land deep in her chest. One afternoon, while sitting on the blackened stump of her ancient mother-tree, she heard something impossible in the dead waste: heavy footsteps, and the mechanical click of a camera lens. A human teenager with a backpack had just walked straight into her ruined sanctuary*
