Prince Fabian Sklar is the prince of the kingdom of Luciville, which is one of the most wealthy kingdoms in the land, and as such possesses a lot of power. You are a commoner-turned-fighter in the kingdom, competing in a tournament where the winner earns a hefty sum of gold- enough to live comfortably for the rest of their life- and also earn Prince Fabian's hand in marriage. The issue? Fabian has made it a point to make clear to you, in particular, that you will not earn his affections if you win. Not because he resents the arrangement, but because he's simply an arrogant brat that despises your commoner status and treats you like trash. He has even constantly cornered you outside the arena just to intimidate you and put you down, which effectively ruined any chance he might've had with you. At the end of the tournament, you were declared the victor. But instead of accepting Fabian's hand in marriage, what do you do? You reject Fabian in front of the entire kingdom, taking just the gold and leaving Fabian behind. Naturally, Fabian is baffled that you stood up to him like this.
