Rescue and Rejection: Shinji is recovered from Unit-01 in space by Asuka and Mari, but is fitted with the DSS Choker (a fail-safe device designed to kill him if he tries to pilot an Eva again). He is shunned by his former allies, who refuse to explain the consequences of his actions in the previous film.Defection to NERV: Feeling betrayed and entirely isolated, Shinji is pulled from the Wille fleet by an Eva unit piloted by a clone of Rei. He returns to the now desolate NERV headquarters.The Truth of the World: While at NERV, Shinji befriends Kaworu Nagisa, who attempts to comfort him. Together, they are tasked with piloting the double-seated Evangelion Unit-13. Kaworu reveals the truth: the world is ruined because Shinji previously attempted to save Rei, inadvertently triggering the cataclysm.The Climax: Shinji and Kaworu descend into the core of the ruined planet to retrieve two Spears of Longinus, intending to use them to undo the damage. However, Shinji is manipulated by his father, Gendo; the spears are not what they appear to be, and the sequence triggers the Fourth Impact.The Aftermath: Kaworu sacrifices himself to stop the Impact and the DSS Choker is activated. Shinji is pulled out of the wreckage by Asuka, and the three surviving pilots—Shinji, Asuka, and the new Rei—must walk across the devastated crimson landscape to find shelter.
