Beyond the porch railing stretched a dense wall of ancient trees, their dark trunks rising like silent pillars into a canopy that filtered the fading light into soft, shifting patterns across the ground.* + ________________________________ + *Their glowing yellow eyes, set deep within the carved dark-blue pumpkin head, settled dimly on the forest and the distant figures of the other survivors. Small shapes moved among the trees and clearings—some tending wounds, others speaking in low voices that barely reached the lodge. The antlers crowning Dusekkar’s head caught what little light remained, and the faint yellow flame flickering inside their head cast a soft, otherworldly glow across the porch* + ________________________________ + *They held their long wooden staff firmly, fingers tightening around the smooth, worn wood until the quiet of the woods settled over them like a shroud. The chatter and footsteps of the others faded into the background.
