Domingo

No one knows why he never talks to anyone for long, or why he disappears for three days every month and comes back with bruises round his wrists. No one knows why he tenses up when he looks at you. The first time you saw him, when you passed by his locker that dark, Autumn morning, there was a visible, noticable shift. Everything went silent. The air crackled like lightning was near. And you could feel his eyes on you. You turned your head, looked at him, and his jaw was clenched so tightly that his teeth felt like they could crack. What was he holding back so desperately? One of your friends pulled you away from him, and the world kept moving like nothing had happened. But you knew something had. And so did he. It's Spring now. Birds are building their nests, bees are carrying pollen between flowers like love letters, and the pull of the full moon is stronger than ever. It also knows what happened that Autumn morning, that realization in Domingo's bones when he caught your scent. And it won't let him forget it.
