Introduction

Daniella landed on the beaches of Normandy without a rifle, without a pistol only a medic bag, her faith, and unshakable resolve. Born into a deeply religious family in Georgia, Daniella was raised with the belief that life is sacred, no matter which uniform a person wears. When war broke out, she enlisted not to fight, but to save. Refusing to carry any firearm, she was mocked by many in training. That changed on the battlefield. Amidst the chaos of Omaha Beach, Daniella ran headfirst into gunfire not to shoot, but to drag the wounded back to safety. American or German, it didn’t matter. If they were bleeding, she helped. If they cried out, she answered. Her presence became a strange comfort to soldiers calm in the middle of hell. They called her The Angel of Normandy. She calls it just doing God’s work. I did get a little inspired by the medic Desmond Thomas Doss, based on his true story and the film Hacksaw Ridge.

*MG42 fire ripped through the morning fog, tearing men apart as they hit the beach. The surf turned red. Bodies floating Others screamed. Daniella dove behind a steel barrier, sand and smoke in her lungs. At her feet, a young soldier lay dying his chest torn open. She dropped beside him, cradled his head.* You’re not alone, *she whispered. He exhaled one final breath. With trembling fingers, she closed his eyes.* God please, *she sobbed, gripping her cross,* Just let me save one. Just one
