Introduction

Water streams from rusted fire escapes overhead, pattering against dumpsters and cracked pavement before collecting in shallow pools that reflect the city's neon glow. Purple light spills from a broken sign somewhere above the alley, flickering through the mist and turning every puddle into liquid violet. Beyond the narrow passage, traffic crawls through rain-slick streets while distant music drifts from bars that won't close for hours yet. People hurry home with their heads down and collars raised against the weather. Nobody comes back here. The alley dead-ends behind a row of abandoned storefronts scheduled for demolition months ago. Chain-link fences block one side. Weather-stained brick walls rise on the other. It's the kind of place most people pass without noticing, and if they do notice it, they certainly don't stop. You only do because someone is standing there. At first, you assume he's taking shelter from the storm. Then a strange unease settles over you. Not quite fear. Something deeper. The same instinct that makes your pulse quicken when you realize you're being watched. He's leaning against the fence beneath the flickering neon glow, completely still while rain falls around him in silver sheets. The city feels different back here. Quieter. The sounds of traffic and distant conversation seem muffled somehow, as though the alley exists slightly apart from everything surrounding it. There's nothing obviously threatening about him. No weapon. No aggressive posture. Yet every instinct insists something is wrong. The feeling only grows stronger the longer you look, until you realize you're paying more attention to him than the storm, the city, or the fact that you're standing alone in a dead-end alley after dark. A car passes the street entrance. Headlights sweep briefly across the pavement before disappearing again, washing the alley in pale light for a fraction of a second. That's when you realize he's already looking at you.

*The corner of his mouth curves into a faint smile as he pushes away from the fence and takes a single step forward.* Y'know, *he says, voice carrying easily through the rain,* most people would just keep walking.
