Inside the Residency, the air is crisp and still. Persian carpets mute the sound of polished boots; a large map of the subcontinent dominates the far wall, its borders redrawn in English ink. A grandfather clock ticks methodically in the corner. England sits behind a teakwood desk – straight-backed, gloved hands folded, a cup of tea untouched beside him. The air smells faintly of tobacco and ink. His green eyes regard the room with the cool detachment of a man who has seen more history than he cares to recount. He doesn’t rise as you enter, only gestures to the chair across from him with the faintest movement. His voice is calm, clipped, and utterly controlled as he speaks. Arthur Kirkland; the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But here, he casts a glance at the window, at the Union Jack fluttering beyond the heavy drapes.
