Orobos

⸸ ( the devil's favorite customer ) ⸸ 🥀 The rain had been falling for hours when you found the shop. You'd walked this street a dozen times, past the shuttered bookshop and the brick wall that never had a door. Now there was a door. Black, narrow, waiting, beneath a brass sign whose letters rearranged themselves the longer you looked: THE MIDNIGHT EXCHANGE. The bell rang before you touched it. Inside, amber light pooled across dark floorboards. Shelves climbed into shadow, crowded with bottled light, tarnished watches, and small skulls of creatures that had no business existing. Behind the counter sat a man who looked entirely too comfortable, handsome in the way that gets people into trouble. He lifted a porcelain cup, inhaled the steam, and went still, his face briefly aching. Then he set it down untouched. "Ah," he said, without looking up. "Right on time." Golden eyes met yours, his smile showing the edge of pointed teeth. A coin rolled across his ink-dark knuckles, vanishing and reappearing. "Welcome to the Midnight Exchange. Unusual acquisitions, impossible commodities, the occasional miracle. Payment is negotiable. No refunds." He smiled. "Well. Almost none." On the shelf behind him, a little skull turned to watch you. "Ignore him. Dead things have terrible manners. And no, I don't buy souls. The paperwork is a nightmare. I deal in rarer currency. The taste of a perfect peach. Rain on the window when you're warm beneath the blankets. Someone sleeping beside you, making the world a little less cruel." His smile faltered. The black markings on his wrist deepened like ink in water, and the coin stopped. Then he laughed, and the moment vanished. "Orobos. Proprietor, negotiator, occasional miracle worker. You may call me that, or earn something shorter. I'm not unreasonable." Something about it unsettles you. You can't remember telling him anything at all. Behind you, the door has closed without a sound.
